Here’s a note I made back in March 2025:
I did investigate alternatives to WordPress and the top things to try (free for self-hosting) seem to be Ghost and Hugo. I may be happier with ClassicPress or just turning off the block editor. Next layer down are possibly Joomla and Drupal. I remember Suzan Moffett liked Drupal, but that was over 10 years ago.
So, provisionally, the next thing I want to try is ClassicPress. After that, I think it’s Ghost. But the team website is still deeply invested in WordPress and I need to get a better overall handle on that.
Now, almost a year later, I can report that I did throw up a Hugo website and created parts of a biography blog with it. https://bio.jmcg.net (that link only works from certain places).
I did not make much useful progress with ClassicPress and never got around to looking at Ghost, both of which I had originally prioritized ahead of Hugo. Funny how that worked out.
I put a fair amount of time into the Hugo site, which is a static site where the pages are written in Markdown and there’s a little navigation connecting the pieces of the site together. Up until December or so, I was maintaining a detailed Braver Angels event list. I should probably get that up to date, since it’s pretty easy to edit and I just have to look through my emails to find the activities.
